Excavated, “War of 1861” style pewter “dog tag” for Charles H. Lewis. He was 31 years old when he enlisted on June 21, 1862. He joined Company C, 34th Massachusetts Infantry. He was made a sergeant immediately and was present with the unit through his whole three-year enlistment. Something happened in December of 1863 as he was reduced to rank of Private for the remainder of the war.
The regiment served in the Washington DC – Harpers Ferry area until later in the war. They were engaged in battles in the Shenandoah Valley, around Petersburg, and in the Appomattox Campaign.
Pewter tag shows wear around rim but is in overall good condition. Stamped “Sergt C. H Lewis / CO. C. / 34th REG. / MASS. V. / NORTHBORO”. No battles and/or campaigns are listed on reverse.
