Published by J.B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia, 1862. Owner inscription, front eps: “Geo. E. Hilton/ Lynn Mass/ Sept. 28 /62.”  559 pp., ills. In green blind stamped cloth, 5.75 x 8.25,” w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits slight soiling & light wear & rubbing at the extremities. Else VG & attractive, w/tight spine.

Born in 1841 in Lynn, Essex County, MA, George E. Hilton was a 21-year-old clerk when he mustered as a corporal into Co. “I”, 8th Massachusetts Infantry, 8/20/1862. Mustered out with his unit, 8/7/1963. The 8th Mass. Infy. was a nine-month regiment that served in the Carolina theatre, principally in and around New Berne, N.C. During service the unit lost nine men by disease.

Hilton was a member of General Lander G.A.R. Post #5 Lynn, and died in Lynn in 1913. He is buried there in Pine Grove Cemetery.
