Full title of this book is Compend of the United States System of Infantry Exercise and Maneuvers, Also, The Best System Extant for Light Infantry and Rifleman” by C. K. Gardner. Book has leather covers. The front cover is coming loose and is held in place at the bottom by red binding tape. Inside front cover in early ink writing is “N.Y. 65 Regt. Infantry” and “Th. Greenly-Owner; J. S. Hartshorn-2nd Owner;H. Coolidge 3rd owner.” On back of this page at bottom is “Alvan A. St. Jacgues.’ On cover is a modern typed label that reads “This book belongs to : SP4 Alvan St. Jacques.” I believe SP4 stands for the modern Army rank of Specialist 4th Class. The book runs approximately 300 pages and has all its plates.
Some internet research shows that in 1817 Thomas Greenly was a Lieutenant in Captain Hartshorn’s Company of the 65th New York Militia. In 1820 it seems to show Greenly as a Colonel with Hartshorn below him. The Coolidge and St. Jacques names will need more research.
