1862 dated book entitled “The Field Manual for Battalion Drill.” Book runs 152 pages and is complete with all drawings and diagrams. Covers show hard wear from use. Minor foxing on some pages. Inside front cover is a paper label that reads “Blanchard & Mohun Booksellers and Stationers… Washington, D.C.” Written in period ink inside front cover is “Dan’l M Felch, 1st. Lt., Co. M, 14th Mass.”
Daniel M. Felch was born on February 8, 1825. He was a 38 year old carpenter living in Haverhill, MA. when he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in Company M of the 14th Massachusetts Infantry on March 19, 1862. The regiment was changed to an artillery unit and was renamed the 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery. On December 11, 1862 Felch was promoted to 1st Lt. He resigned due to disability on January 27, 1863. He returned to Haverhill and after the war joined Major Howe Post #47 of the GAR. Sometime later he moved to Newburyport, MA. where he became a member of the A. W. Bartlett Post #49. He died February 2, 1898. It is also believed that he had service in the war with Mexico. Internet research comes with the item.
