Colonel Joel W. Mason was commissioned into the Field and Staff of the 6th on May 14, 1861as a 1st Lt. and Adjutant. He was mustered out on July 31, 1861. He was mustered in again as Colonel on May 22, 1863 and was mustered out on July 22, 1863. Though the regiment was Federalized twice they saw no fighting.
