Full standing CDV view of a bearded officer standing by a raised pillar. He wears a slouch hat turned up on the right side with the number “59” on the crown with a hat cord around its base. He also wears a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant’s shoulder straps and a Veterans stripe on each lower sleeve, light trousers with Officer’s leg stripe and a dark military vest with watch and chain. On the left breast of the coat is a round ID disc.

Subject is identified as Samuel Baxter who served with the 8th, 19th, 59th and 57th Massachusetts Infantry.

The image is clear with great contrast. Paper and mount have some light amounts of surface dirt.

Reverse has collector’s information and a photographer’s imprint for H. P. MACINTOSH…NEWBURYPORT. Also on reverse, at top, is a period pencil ID that reads “MISS LIZZIE THOMPSON WITH RESPECTS.” At bottom is “MR. BAXTER.”

Samuel Baxter was a 32-year-old Musician living in Newburyport when he enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in Company A, 8th Massachusetts Infantry on April 12, 1861. With the 8th Baxter served in the defenses around Washington and Baltimore. He was mustered out August 1, 1861.

Two days later, on August 3, 1861, Baxter enlisted as Sergeant Major of the 19th Massachusetts. The regiment went to Virginia where they arrived in time to cover the withdrawal of the Union Army from the fight at Ball’s Bluff. On November 29, 1861 Sgt. Maj. Baxter was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company D. He led the Company during the Peninsula Campaign but was discharged on August 1, 1862.

Baxter remained a civilian until he re-enlisted as a Sergeant in Company E, 59th Massachusetts Infantry on February 4, 1864. The regiment was engaged at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor and Petersburg where they were involved in the attack on “The Crater” and Fort Stedman. After the fall of Richmond and Petersburg the regiment did guard duty in the area till sent to Washington. On June 1, 1865 Baxter was transferred to Company A, 57th Massachusetts and was finally mustered out on July 30, 1865.
