CDV is of 1st Lieutenant Alfred Haskell of Medford, Massachusetts. He is posed with one arm resting on a low pedestal. He wears a forage cap with infantry insignia on the front with a number at center, a dark frock coat with 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps and light trousers. At his waist he wears his sash and sword belt with his Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword still in its scabbard. Image is clear with contrast a little on the light side.

Reverse has collector’s information in pencil and a photographer’s imprint for G. H. LOOMIS…BOSTON. ID is confirmed by an on line database.

Alfred Haskell was born on April 14, 1831. He was working as a shipwright in Medford until he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 5th Massachusetts Infantry on April 16, 1861 for three months. During his service the regiment was engaged at the 1st battle of Bull Run where it suffered 9 killed, 2 wounded and 23 prisoners. Haskell was mustered out on July 31, 1861.

Haskell next served as a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 5th Massachusetts Infantry being commissioned on September 23, 1862 for 9 months. During this period of service the regiment served in North Carolina where it was engaged at Kinston, Whitehall and Goldsboro as well as two expeditions to Little Washington. The regiment returned to Boston and was mustered out on July 2, 1863.

After his service he returned to Medford where he lived for the rest of his life. In the post-war years he was a member of the S. C. Lawrence Post #66 of the GAR. He died in Medford on May 10, 1906.
