This image is one of several that were popular during the war showing white children who, because of their African-American blood and mixed racial heritage had been held as slaves in New Orleans.
The three children were named Rebecca, Charley and Rosa. This is a bust view of Rebecca by herself. The image is clear with good contrast. The mount has a printed caption that reads “REBECCA – A SLAVE GIRL FROM NEW ORLEANS.”
The reverse has a photographer’s back mark for J. E. MCCLEES of PHILADELPHIA with a printed note saying that the proceeds from the sales of this image will be devoted to the education of the Colored people in the Department of the Gulf under the command of Major General Banks..
