NINTH PLATE AMBROTYPE OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIER, POSSIBLY ID’D AS MAJOR J.H. McDOWELL, 5TH SOUTH CAROLINA INFANTRY

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4199

This is a waist-up view of a Confederate soldier wearing a light colored, double breasted frock coat and forage cap. It is believed to be ID’D as CS Major J.H. McDowell of the 5th South Carolina Infantry, based on a similar image in the book, “Even More Confederate Faces” by William A. Turner, page 190.

Image is clear with good contrast, but has darkened with age. Hat insignia and buttons have been tinted gold.

Image comes housed in full gutta-percha case, which is in very good condition. Case is lined in burgundy colored velvet with an embossed design. Decorative brass mat surrounds the image.

Joseph H. McDowell was born in 1839 and enlisted in the CS Army as a Captain. A small typewritten note underneath the image in the case indicates that his name is listed in the 5th SC as surrendering at Appomattox. McDowell died in 1912 in Amarillo, TX and is buried there in Llano Cemetery.  [sm]
