Reverse has inscription using the same blue ink. It reads “J. B. DIEHL, LT. & A.D.C. TO GEN. E.B.TYLER.” Beneath this is a modern pencil ID.

James B. Diehl enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company D of the 91st at Philadelphia on October 7, 1861. On November 4, 1862 he was detailed as an aide to Brigadier General E. B. Tyler. Diehl served in this capacity till his discharge for disability on July 24, 1864.

After the war he was an original member of M.O.L.L.U.S. and a member of the George Meade Post #1 of the GAR in Philadelphia. He died on March 23, 1886 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
