Bust view of Lieutenant James Diehl of Company D, 91st Pennsylvania. Diehl is shown looking slightly to his left. He wears a dark frock coat with 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps. The coat is open at the collar revealing a white shirt and dark bow tie. Mount is heavily trimmed but the image has good contrast and clarity.

Lower mount has embossed name that is difficult to read, possibly "POLLOCK". Period inscription in blue ink reads “JIM B. DIEHL” and is underlined for decoration. Reverse has inscription using the same blue ink. It reads “J. B. DIEHL, LT. & A.D.C. TO GEN. E.B.TYLER.” Beneath this is a modern pencil ID.

James B. Diehl enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company D of the 91st at Philadelphia on October 7, 1861. On November 4, 1862 he was detailed as an aide to Brigadier General E. B. Tyler. Diehl served in this capacity till his discharge for disability on July 24, 1864.

After the war he was an original member of M.O.L.L.U.S. and a member of the George Meade Post #1 of the GAR in Philadelphia. He died on March 23, 1886 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
