$950.00 SOLD

Item Code: 729-94

Presented is a fine, late nineteenth century, maker-marked, walnut-cased amputation kit. In very good overall condition, the velvet lined, four compartment surgical case contains a total of twenty finely crafted, individual medical surgical instruments and appliances typically used in the surgical field. Instruments are housed in a triple-hinged, lockable walnut case. When closed, the case measures 13½” long x 6” wide x 3¾” high. Kit is missing its original key. The top lid of case was decorated with a scalloped brass medallion inlaid now missing.

Among the medical instruments included in this surgical operating kit is a large bone or amputation saw with three blades, two surgical knives, two amputation surgical saws, one ebony handle, a bullet forceps, one director, one extraction elevator, seven surgical scalpels, one Nelanton probe, and a small brush. Scalpels feature bone handles that are maker stamped. Knives have checkered ebony handles and ae also marked. All medical instruments are in very good original condition and would need only some very light cleaning to move them to a very good condition.

Entire case interior is lined in a deep purple velvet material that is still vibrant and strong. Interior has light accumulation of surface dust and scuffing in areas. The inner portion of the two section wooden base each exhibits a custom-cut holder for instruments. Two other wooden tray compartments will drop-in on top of base. Case has a gold printed, oval, maker’s label on the inner pasteboard cover that is secured to the upper portion of case. Reads “J. RYNDERS & CO. / Surgical & Orthopedical / Instruments, 309 Fourth Ave. / NEW YORK.”

Walnut case exterior has acquired a dark-toned patina overall. Wood case lid surface exhibits moderate warping and cracking from moisture, along with normal scuffs and scratches from age and use. Nineteenth century amputation kits are highly sought in the medical collecting field today. This original 1880’ era surgical grouping offers an opportunity to add a piece of American medical history to a collection at a very reasonable price.
