Twelve small ivory handled scalpels, set in pebbled black leather case, 4.5 x 6.25 x .625”, with blue felt lining, & brass clasp fastener. Inner maker-stamp: “Weiss & Son/287 Oxford St. / London”. Outer case marking: “D.P.H.” [possible custom owner marking]. Scalpel handles measure 3.75”, with blade lengths ranging from 1.125 to 1.5”. Scalpel handle stampings: “Weiss London D. P.H. [with one stamped “Weiss London L.R.”]. The outer case is in excellent condition while displaying “D.P.H.” paper stickers under the larger gilt stamped initials. Scalpel handles exhibit light darkening consequent to wear. Inner blue felt is in excellent shape, outer brass clasp fine. Otherwise VG plus. The medical instrument firm of Weiss & Son was founded in 18th Century London and moved to its 287 Oxford Street address in 1885. These small delicate scalpels seem designed for oculists and eye surgeons. Handsome 19th Century medical collectible.
