Item Code: 490-1050

A nice set to try and fill out with missing instruments. Large 4-tier set manufactured by “DIETRICH W. KOLBE / MAKER / 32 South Ninth St. / Philadelphia”. Kit measures 16 ½” long, 7” deep and 4 ½” high. Top has a brass escutcheon plate with “J. C. RICHARDS MD” in nice script engraving. Each corner with brass reinforcements. Interior with red velvet. Kit contains only a few of its original instruments. Bottom tray with maker’s label has two small scalpels with checkered ebony handles. “KOLBE” on each instrument.

Bottom of kit has a single trephine post and handle and a Capital Amputation Saw marked “KOLBE / PHILA” with blade. A small spare blade also in kit. The top/lid areas a red velvet cover which when removed exposes a removable tray with a metacarpal saw and a trocar. Saw marked “KOLBE”. Trocar unmarked. The bottom of the lid has later probe and a gutta percha tube.

The kit needs to be filled out – not an easy task but possible.

More research needs to be done on the identity of the surgeon also.

A nice project.   [ss]
