Item Code: 172-3369

Here is a very excellent, almost mint, original U.S. cavalry curb bit of the pattern 1863 from the Civil War. Adopted by the U.S. Army in January 1859, this style iron curb bit debuted at the same time as the McCellan saddle.

Made by the Newark, NJ saddlery hardware firm of Alexander Barclay & Co in 1863, the handsome cavalry bit retains almost all its original blued iron factory color in addition to its colored, steel curb chain with its leather collar, and the two, brass rosettes or bosses tightly attached. Bit is maker-marked, “A. BARCLAY” on the left side branch’s upper cheek strap near the slot. Curb bit shows no visible government inspector marks.

In almost mint condition, this bit shows almost no use and retains most of its original factory bluing with just age mellowing and some light rubbing along the branch surfaces. The regulation cavalry artifact, with its number two port size or arch in the center of the mouth piece, shows no rust pitting or any blemishes. Curb bit also retains its two, lower iron rein rings and the slobber curved ‘slobber’ bar with just faint traces of bluing. In addition, this bit still retains both original brass ‘bosses’ with letters “U S” on the cheek or side branches. Specimen also retains its original curb chain as well as its seldom seen leather curb collar or strap.

This is a minty example of Federal horse equipment from the Civil War. It would highlight any Union cavalry collection or military equestrian display.
