CIVIL WAR, GOLD BULLION RIBBON SWORD KNOT

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1047-196

Privately purchased by military officers during the war, this ribbon saber knot or sword strap of gold bullion thread is complete with its finial-style stem and large gold bullion knot.

A bullion ribbon is folded over upon itself to create a 16” long strap that terminates in a braided bullion stem and a large bullion knot. In action, the piece was secured to a sword hilt and then looped around the officer’s wrist like a lanyard. Purpose of the device was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that loosed the blade from his grip.

The bullion ribbon strap is 1/2” wide and has some minor wear but remains strong. A single woven loop on the strap remains in place. All bullion has a light patina with no tears. The woven bullion knot is in excellent condition.  These officer’s sword knots are becoming difficult to obtain in the market today.  [jet]
