Here is a complete well-worn bridle constructed of heavy leather.

The headpiece is just over 1 ¾” wide with tooled edge. The sliding brow band is just over 1” wide and also has tolled edge. Below the brow band the headpiece splits into the throatlatch and the two cheek pieces.

The throatlatch is adjustable having a brass harness buckle on each side. The throatlatch also retains decorative rosettes on each side.  These plain rosettes are 1 ¾” in diameter, silver plated faces with tin backs. These are typical of rosettes recovered from Civil War sites.

The two cheek pieces are also adjustable with brass harness buckles on each side. Each also has a second brass buckle at the lower end where the cheek pieces are attached to the iron bit.

Iron bit is civilian style, being of lighter construction than a military style bit. Surface of bit is oxidized and pitted, but overall the bit is complete and remains strong. There is no curb chain on the bit.

Attached to the lower rings of the bit are the reins. Reins were sewn together to make them one piece.

Overall condition of leather is worn but very strong. Leather appears to have been treated and some point. All stitching remains tight and strong. Brass buckles exhibit mellow patina and some have patches of green verdigris where they are in contact with the leather. This probably hung in a barn for years.

A nice, used, complete bridle of Civil War vintage or earlier.  [jet]
