ORIGINAL CONFEDERATE TONGUE AND WREATH BUCKLE ON ATTACHED NON-DUG, LEATHER WAIST BELT

$4,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 697-144

A rare and desirable Confederate uniform accoutrement is this very fine condition, cast brass, two-piece tongue and wreath buckle attached to its original black leather waist belt.  The non-dug, brass, two-piece buckle measures 3 1/8” long x 2” high with the tongue that exhibits a “CS” in well worn raised letters. Accompanying well-worn wreath with its laurel border which perfectly fits the tongue. Both wreath and tongue brass belt loops have slight distortion and the leather belt has the original adjuster loop and stitching to secure the two-piece buckle. No new repairs or modifications to the belt folds. Buckle has no cracks or weak areas and wears a rich, golden-copper toned patina with few dark age spots. No maker’s marks visible. Black leather belt is complete and is somewhat stiff to the touch but still strong. The single-folded and looped belt measures approximately 38” long and is 1½” wide with a leather exterior that shows moderate crazing and cracking. A 3” long section of the leather belt appears to have been squeezed or compacted from long storage and is quite stiff. Belt shows two telltale vertical rows of stitching holes from likely sword hanger loops. A great CS two-piece on its original leather belt.
