These belt plates are hard to find and were specifically designed for enlisted mounted dragoons or riflemen.
The plate is in non-dug condition and measures 56 x 88mm. It is constructed with a die-struck, rolled brass face that features large raised letters "US". The face has a nice mellow patina and is free of nicks and scratches.
The reverse is complete with puppy paw style hooks and tongue. The lead fill is smooth and in good condition with only some minor scratches.
What makes this belt plate different from the infantry oval plates is that the hooks of the dragoon plate are arranged so that the posts for attaching it to the belt are found behind the letter "S" and the tongue behind the letter "U". This was done to accommodate a dragoon's saber belt.
