The quintessential Civil War Union army belt plate, the stamped brass oval US belt plate with solder-filled back and fastening hooks was first introduced in 1839. They are an entire collecting category of their own, with some minor size variations, but a number of different die strikes and fastening stud designs. This one is the “arrow-back” pattern, from the configuration of the two belt hooks. Most notable, however, is the impressive amount of gilt finish left on the face of the plate. There is some darkening to the raised surfaces of the “US” and some minor rubs, but better than eighty percent of the original, as-issued finish remains. This has often vanished to wear or to polish at the hands of soldiers deemed to have too much time on their hands by their First Sergeants, or to a well-intentioned but misguided descendent of a veteran who thought they were improving it. Both fastening arrowhead studs and the beveled fastening hook are in place. This is a top-shelf example. [sr]
