The body of the canteen is tin and meas. approx. 6.50 inches across x 1.30 inches thick. It has a single spout with original cork stopper and ring for attaching string or chain now gone. All three sling keepers are present. The canteen is covered with a grayish brown wool cover tightly sewn on either side of the spout. The material is in very good condition with only light surface dirt from age and storage. Glued to the front of the canteen is an old museum or GAR hall tag that meas. approx. 1.75 inches long x 1.00 wide that reads REBEL.” Leather sling passes completely around the canteen and is adjusted by a roller buckle with leather keeper. Sling meas. approx. 0.50 inch wide throughout. Surface of the leather sling is a bit dry with moderate surface crackling. The body of the canteen is excellent with no dings or dents. Confederate tin drum canteens are seldom found with the original sling and cover.
