$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4040

Intact Civil War Model 1858 smoothside-pattern tin canteen. Item is similar to those issued to Union troops in the field during the conflict. The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.

Item is of the New York Depot style and retains its original wool cover. This specimen exhibits a woven brown wool cover that is in good condition. Cloth material does show some wear and surface grime with one hole that meas. approx. 1.50 x 1.25 inches.

The original sling, cork stopper, iron pull ring and chain are present as are all three metal sling keepers. Pewter spout is not marked. Cork is broken with dent in top. Sling is curled and shows wear from use. Also has an old knot tied to shorten the sling length which is another probable sign of use.  Canteen body is in good condition and is free of dents.
