$325.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4036

Civil War Model 1858 smoothside tin canteen. Item is similar to those issued to Union troops in the field during the conflict. The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.

Item is of the New York Depot style and retains its original brown wool cover that is in good condition. Cloth material does show a small hole on each side caused by wear as well as some spots where the thickness of the cloth has thinned. Edge seam on the cover are worn with some area of separation. Nothing major.

Accoutrement has a complete but heavily worn sling that has an old repair and a knot tied to shorten sling length. The cork stopper, iron pull ring and chain are gone as is the bottom sling keeper. Pewter spout has no markings but does have a hole in the side for easier flow of water. Canteen body is in good condition with a minor indentation on each side.
