Wood canteen is the type commonly carried by C.S. soldiers. Original leather sling is present, and all three iron sling keepers. Spout is missing, which is usually the case in wooden canteens. Measures 6 ¾” in circumference by 2 ¼” wide.
Iron retaining bands are present. Both bands are slightly loose, but still hold the body of canteen together. One wooden side has cracked all the way across, and indented at one edge. In this area, several of the wooden slats are also slightly loose. Other than this area, which is approx. a third of the diameter of the canteen, the other two-thirds is tight. There is a hand-carved symbol present. Other side has a lighter surface crack. All over, shows small scratches and dings, yet canteen is in good condition for its age and was obviously well used in the field.
This is an essential piece for a collector of Confederate items. Most C.S. soldiers started out with wooden canteens before transitioning to tin. [SL]
