The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin, formed in an oblate spheroid pattern and soldered together at the rim. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.
Item is of the New York Depot style and retains its original brown wool cover that is in good condition despite moderate surface dirt and heavy staining on one side. Cloth does not show any holes. Edge seam on the cover is tight.
Canteen has three-quarters of the heavily worn cloth sling. A leather piece has been added to extend the sling by passing the cloth sling through holes in the leather and then tying a knot. There is no stopper. Pewter spout has no markings.
Canteen body is in good condition but does have several shallow dents. [ad]
