Confederate style tin drum canteen. This example measures 6 and 3/4 by 2 and 3/4 (includes the raised surface). Tin sling loops are located at the 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. The seams are sealed with heavy solder; there is a 1 and 1/4 inch perforation below the spout. The rolled lip spout is firmly positioned; there is no stopper present. One surface has the raised inner ring; this example has a 2-inch indentation at the inner ring. A wide variety of this canteen is seen across Civil War private and public collections. The larger version was known as the “Tennessee style.” Comparison canteens are highlighted on pages 88-89 of Sylvia and O’Donnell’s “Civil War Canteens.” With those exceptions stated above and some minor surface scratches, this is an excellent and highly desirable example.
