This example has a tall, narrow tin spout with a rolled lip and three sling loops located at the 2 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 10 o’clock positions. No stopper or chain are present. Comparison Confederate examples are found on pages 128 and 130 of Sylvia and O’Donnell’s “Civil War Canteens. The wool cover has a dark color with staining exhibited on the surfaces. Several small holes are present, the largest of which is 1 inch by 1/2 inch. Some of the cover holes show signs of early (possibly wartime) repairs. Approximately half of the cover is detached along the seamline. The metal surfaces appear to be fully intact and they have a fine, rust-free patina with a small indentation below the spout. A 4 inch section of homespun style sling with frayed ends remains at an upper sling loop. [jc]
