Due to wartime demand, many of these canteens were manufactured by small firms and exhibit wide variety on construction and materials. The canteen body and pewter spout are firmly intact. Sling loops are soundly located at the 2 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 10 o’clock positions. The cover stitching is tight and free of holes. It has a butternut appearance in color. The stopper and chain are anchored in place; approximately 1/4 of the cork is missing. The sling is 3/4 inches wide and has double lines of stitching; its color is dark and it remains supple. Fraying is evident at the upper two sling loops and there are approximately six points with 1/4" of fraying. The sling is joined by a 1” buckle, the style commonly seen on cavalry cartridge boxes. There are no markings evident on the canteen. [JC]
