This original Civil War artifact is a very good example of the typical Federal Model 1858 smoothside canteen that was refurbished and reissued to United States forces during the Indian War period of the late 1870s-1880s.  One of the most important accoutrements of any soldier’s gear outside his weapon was his canteen.  A most recognizable canteen, this original specimen is a product of the New York Army Depot and consists of two circular spheroid sections of pressed tin formed in an oblate pattern and soldered together along the rim.  The canteen body is excellent with no dents or depression whatever.

Canteen has had the old wartime cover replaced with a period coarse gray wool covering.  Spaced along the rim are three iron sling loops, one that has a small hole for attachment of the multi-link chain, typical of the New York Depot.  Iron pull ring, metal link chain and corkstopper are original, as are the three iron strap loops on the body.   Shoulder sling strap is also an Indian War replacement.   Sling is clean and has one ½” tear near the shoulder area.  Canteen, in excellent condition, is a true surviving artifact of both the American Civil War and the Indian War and would display nicely in any military collection.
