Black felt oval that meas. approx. 3.50 inches long x 2.25 inches wide and is outlined with a double border of gold dead bullion. Felt is in excellent condition.
At center of the oval are crossed sabers done in gold bullion thread and gold twisted wire with a false embroidered white metal number “4” at top above sabers. Number is 0.50 inch high.
Bullion thread is in good condition and has darkened some with age.
This piece has a pasted heavy paper backing. There are no hooks. Insignia was meant to be sewn to the cap or hat.
Excellent condition high quality item.

This cavalry officer’s frock coat shows some signs of wear, but still rates very good for condition and has a great identification established by a wonderful Baltimore tailor’s tag sewn in one shoulder reading “T. McCORMICK, MERCHANT TAILOR,… (1179-639). Learn More »
