The Palmetto tree was instantly recognizable as the insignia of South Carolina troops, a reminder of the resilience of Palmetto log fort defenses against British cannon in the Revolution. About two inches tall, this is a embroidered example in solid condition with its black, tarred paper backing intact, and muted gold color with traces of the original silvering. These small insignia could fit the front of a natty kepi or forage cap, but also show up sometimes on the upturned brim of a classic Confederate slouch hat. (SR)
