This is a nice example of an artillery officer’s hat or cap insignia intended to be sewn in place. The jaceron wire border is still complete and secure. The crossed cannon are slightly muted but show lots of color and the central red roundel is intact. There is no moth damage. The edge of the badge shows slight fraying, but nothing unsightly. The cannon barrels have small circles worked in each near breech to indicate touch holes. The reverse shows a light brown open weave backing.
This would fit well in an artillery officer’s display or collection of embroidered officers’ insignia. The small central red roundel was intended to have a unit designation affixed, but in practice it seems to have been rarely done. [sr]
