These original, black bridle leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today. Issued to Union horsemen during the war, this completely unmarked leather strap is in excellent condition and comes complete with its full set of tassels. The 1" wide leather loop measures 33" long when unfolded and over 16" long when looped for service on the cavalryman's saber. Remarkably strong yet supple, the knot is held flat together by two plaited leather stays or loops, and exhibits a plaited set of thin tassels at the tip. The tassels appear to have been heavily coated at one time with a sealant similar to Picard, most of which has been removed.

The bridle leather knot's smooth surface has an uncracked appearance and is free of any flaking, cracking or tears. As part of the trooper's equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the cavalry saber hilt and then looped around the trooper's wrist. The purpose of the saber knot was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that loosed the blade from his grip. This is a very excellent saber knot overall and would make a fine addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display.
