PATTERN 1855 CARBINE SLING

Item Code: 779-13

A superb example of the Dragoon / Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with the musketoon, rifled carbine and all of the patented breech-loading carbines. The sling was worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back. Pre-1855 versions of this sling were originally designated to be made of buff leather, but in 1855 the regulations changed it to read “SABRE-BELT WITH SHOULDER STRAP, AND CARBINE SLING-TO BE OF BLACK LEATHER INSTEAD OF MATERIAL NOW FURNISHED (Instead of blackened buff leather)”.

This specimen is constructed of a black bridle leather belt measuring 2 .5” wide by 50” in length with hardware of a steel swivel and snap-hook device used to attach it to the carbine ring. Also present is a large rectangular brass adjustment buckle and brass sling end tip. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well. The condition of the leather is excellent and very supple, without damages, some very light crazing to the outer leather surface. Note that it has been treated with Pecard Leather Dressing. The metallic parts are clean and free of rust and verdigris. There are no visible signs of makers or inspectors markings; there is, however, the number ‘33’ stamped into the leather near the belt end tip.
