CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY DRIVER’S LEG GUARD

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M25485

Worn by the caisson driver to protect his inside leg from the tongue of the caisson. This bridle leather leg wrap is complete with all straps and steel plate. There are four straps (5/8” wide) with roller buckles along the leg. A single heel strap on the bottom is riveted in place but broken. A steel plate (2 ¼” wide x 16” long) runs up the leg. All leather is stiff but is good condition, albeit with light surface mold. All stitching is tight and strong. Very lightly stamped “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL”. This is an original Civil War period piece, however the post-war Rock Island stamping was added at the turn of the century when all old material was ordered to be inventoried and stamped. These are quite scarce and an exceptional example.  [jet]
