This pair of leather saddle bags is in fair condition. Each bag flap is embossed with a “US” within an oval and both bags have all three of the closure straps. Only one buckle remains on each side. The exterior leather is dirty from age and storage but still supple. There is moderate to heavy wear overall but the leather remains strong. Buttons to anchor the linings are present in one bag. No cloth linings or bags remain.
Connecting the two bags is a wide strip of leather with a hole at center for attaching the bags to the back of the saddle. This strip is reinforced at the center designating this as the “second pattern” of the model 1904 saddle bags. A name, “W.D. THOMPSON” is stamped on the edge of the cross strap.
A well used example of typical World War 1 saddle bags. [jet]
