CIVIL WAR PERIOD LEATHER OFFICER’S SADDLE VALISE

$495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M25912

This saddle valise is entirely made of japanned leather and meas. approx. 17.75 inches long. It is circular in shape and meas. approx. 6.00 inches across. The main body is made of one piece of leather. The ends are made of leather discs that are sewn in place. In addition to each end piece being sewn to the main body there is also a line of circular stitching with a smaller circular tooled line at center for a decoration. The bag has a flap that runs the length of the piece. This flap is sewn in place and is held closed by three roller buckles and straps. The edge of the flap has a tooled line for decoration. The interior of the bag is not lined. The back of the valise has two horizontal cuts approx. 6.00 inches apart for attaching the item to a saddle.

Condition wise the valise is in good shape. The leather surface is crackled throughout with some finish loss. This seems to be more deterioration of the japanning on the surface of the leather rather than the leather itself. The edges of the flap are slightly curled. When the flap is open it can be seen that a half-inch of stitching on one end has split. The rest of the end seams are good. All three roller buckles are present as well as the three leather keepers and straps. The inside has been stuffed with paper to help the valise keep its shape.
