This original and intact leather accoutrement set is a great example of a Confederate-used black bridle leather belt matched with a leather belt holster.  Typical of the rigs worn by many Confederate enlisted men during the war, the thick leather belt has an iron buckle and clasp and measures 39” long x 1 5/8”wide.  Leather is still supple with moderate creasing, cracking and scuffing over the entire surface.   Opposite end of belt has punched holes for the clasp. No markings or stampings on the belt.  The finely-crafted leather flap holster is also unmarked.

In very good overall condition, the holster is constructed of thick black bridle leather and measures approximately 14 ½” long when flap is closed. All stitching is strong and tight save for a 1” separated area at the top section of the holster. Holster body leather is smooth with some light cracking and crazing. Back side retains a single belt loop. The closure tab on flap is split on the right side. The iron finial is present. There is a ¼’ hole through both the front and back near the very bottom of the holster, as well as a crack on the right side, about 5” up from the bottom.

An integral component of a Southern cavalryman’s equipage, this type of leather belt and holster was also carried by many artillerymen, as well as officers, on campaign.

This Confederate-used leather holster with its accompanying leather waist belt is in good original condition. The set would make a fine addition to any Confederate soldier display or Civil War leather collection.
