This group consists of a belt and buckle, percussion cap pouch, and a model 1855 bayonet with scabbard.

The waist belt was made by the soldier out of a buff leather cartridge box sling. The slits for the breast plate are easily found on the belt. A name is written on the inside of the belt but is worn to the point that the name just cannot be deciphered. An old paper tag on the outside of the belt identifies the recovery location. The edges of the tag are worn away, but the center portion reads, “[b]ayonet & scabbard / [A]rmy of the Potomac / near Fredericksburg / 1863”. There is a standard US enlisted buckle (with arrow hooks) mounted on the belt.

On the belt is a percussion cap pouch. The outer flap has lost most of its surface finish but is fairly soft and pliable. This pattern has the integral closing tab as part of the flap. The interior flap is supple and has both inner “ears” remaining in place. Oval maker’s stamp is partially visible. A St. Louis maker. The body of the box is complete and in excellent condition. The original fleece and nipple pick are long gone. Bottom has brass finial. Both belt loops remain in place on back. All stitching is intact.

The leather scabbard is in good condition. The black leather body shows only light wear and no weak spots. Some minor scuffs and chips to the finish. Brass finial has several dents but is still firmly attached and has a dark patina. Scabbard frog is buff leather and is the two-rivet variety.

The Model 1855 bayonet itself is a dark brown color with scattered, fine surface rust overall. Locking ring is perfect. Weakly stamped “US” on the blade flat.

Excellent set of battlefield pick-up leather accoutrements.   [jet]
