New Hampshire State Militia buckle, intended for units from New Hampshire. This plate is believed to have been manufactured during the war. The New Hampshire militia was authorized in 1862. None of these plates are known to have been recovered from battlefields, however if these plates were issued to home guard units, as is likely, they would not have been taken south.
Buckle is oval following the Federal regulation of 1839, and was designed to secure a belt fitted over a soldier's jacket, used to carry his cartridge and cap box, along with any other items carried on a belt. Brass plate is stamped on thin sheet brass, lead filled, configured as a right-handed buckle, brass arrow hooks with narrow tongue milled to a bevel. Measures 86mm x 55mm. Face shows a few small dings and scratches. Reference, O'Donnell & Campbell, Plate 597.
Belt is bridle leather, measuring 1 ¾” wide with brass keeper on one end. Leather remains soft and pliable. [jet]
