MAKER MARKED FEDERAL PERCUSSION CAP BOX

$195.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 422-39

This percussion cap box is a very good, complete example of an honest Federal pattern, leather accoutrement carried by US Infantrymen during the Civil War. Cap box construction exhibits both copper rivets and seam stitching that is strong and tight. Thick black leather outer flap is remarkably tight and exhibits a surface that shows minor cracking and crazing. A stamped small “US” is strongly visible on the center of the outer face flap. Weak, rare maker’s mark of “SMITH BOURN & CO / HARTFORD / CONN” visible on the inner flap which exhibits moderate flaking.

The flap’s integral closure tab is original, supple, with a tiny partial tear. Box has its original ‘pear-shaped’ brass finial tightly secured to the body. This cap box still has its full original wool fleece pad secured to the inside as well as its original iron nipple pick. Box backside has two, original, leather vertical belt loops sewn and riveted. Stitching is tight and strong. Outer flap retains just one ‘ear’ or side cover. This Federal Civil War percussion cap box is a strong complete specimen at a great price.
