Leather Pattern 1864 US cartridge box with embossed US on the outer flap in overall good condition.
The outer flap of this box has a nice smooth leather surface with a strong embossed “US” in an oval. There is one hole punched through each letter for attaching a brass cartridge box plate that is now gone. The leather latch tab is complete and is sewn and riveted to the underside of the flap.
The inner flap matches the outer one in condition. Both ears are present and firmly attached. The interior body of the box is also in very good condition with some light wear to the right edge of the implement pocket. Both tins are present.
The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and the brass finial. The reverse has both the belt and sling loops which are in good condition. The box has some crazing on the sides and appears to have been very lightly treated with a leather preservative but it is not overdone.
A very nice late war box.
