Leather covered wood block that meas. approx. 8.50 inches long x 3.50 inches wide x 3.00 inches tall. The wood block is cut slightly convex in shape. The leather covering the wood block is attached with three roundhead tacks across the top front edge. It then wraps around the bottom of the box and up the back where nine more tacks hold it in place. The sides appear to be glued at top with some kind of period animal or vegetable glue while the side bottoms are sewn.

The wood of the block is dark but in good shape and contains twenty-four drilled .80 holes.

The same nine tacks that hold the leather in place at the back also hold a leather flap that is wider than the box and extends below the front edge. The surface of this flap has a nice smooth black finish with light wear. Still sewn to the underside of the flap is the original leather latch tab. Matching it on the bottom front edge of the box is the remains of a leather tab that held a leather knot or button to keep the box closed. This knot or button is now gone.

The original leather sling is still present and complete though it shows wear. It meas. approx. 1.75 inches wide and is approx. 39.00 inches around in length. The ends of this sling are anchored to the box by passing between the wood block and the leather covering and being held by four tacks each.

The leather covering the box is in surprisingly good condition. It is smooth and clean and supple but does have some wear on the bottom side edges and corners where wood is visible. The sling is in similar condition but also has some crazing and a weak area where the sling meets the box on one side.
