According to criteria set forth in Paul D. Johnson’s fine work “CIVIL WAR CARTRIDGE BOXES OF THE UNION INFANTRYMAN” this box is of the March 1864 pattern.
Examination of the box and sling show it to be in used but good condition. The exterior of the box is in very nice shape with a smooth leather surface with very minor crazing along top edge of the outer flap. At center of the flap is a nice Pattern 1839 oval “US” plate that has a very nice semi-dark untouched patina and that is still anchored by the leather thong. Below the plate is a straight line of stitching with a rivet anchoring a repaired latch tab.
The interior of the box is also in good condition. The inner flap has some light crazing but both ears are attached and the implement pocket is solid. Both tins are also present.
The bottom edge of the box has both roller buckles and the brass finial. Reverse has both sling and belt loops with the loops being attached by stitching and rivets. All seams on the box are tight.
The sling shows wear along the edges of the leather where there is some minor scattered chipping. Face surface has light crazing. Pattern 1826 eagle breastplate is attached with a replacement leather thong but the plate has a nice semi-dark patina to match the plate on the box. Sling is complete with no breaks or repairs.
