Here is an early (perhaps 1830s) leather cartridge box that held 24 musket rounds. Constructed of heavy black leather, the box measures about 4 ¼” tall x 6 ½” wide x 2 ¼” deep.
Outer flap features ornate tooling and a scalloped bottom edge. Also has a stamped brass ornament mounted on the center of the flap. Closing tab is complete and unbroken. There is no inner flap. The box contains 24 tin tubes to hold cartridges. They are the approximate size of a .69 caliber round. The bottom of the box retains the original leather “knot” to hold the outer flap closed. These “knots” were common to early accoutrements before brass finials became the standard closure device. Two ¾” wide belt loops are sewn to the back of the box.
Overall, the box is in very good condition. Some surface crazing overall. The back shows the most wear and there is a 2” tear in the leather running down one edge.
Interesting and attractive early musket cartridge box with tin cartridge tubes. [jet]
