This is a complete percussion cap pouch with an eagle breast plate mounted on the flap. The leather shows use and the whole piece is in good overall condition. This pattern has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap. The latch tab is unbroken. This pattern has no interior flap or side “ears”. No fleece remains. Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and intact.
Mounted to the outer flap is an eagle breast plate (normally for the cartridge box shoulder strap). It is secured to the flap by a strip of leather and these pieces have definitely been together for a very long time. Visible on the back of the round plate in the maker’s stamp, “E. GAYLORD”.
An original Civil War cap pouch with marked eagle breast plate. [jet]
