STATE OF NEW YORK CARTRIDGE BOX WITH SLING

Item Code: 33-443

A good condition Civil War .58 caliber rifle musket cartridge box by Baker and McKenney with an original sling and original New York “SNY” oval cartridge box plate still in place. Laura Baker was one of the few female contractors to the government, taking over her husband’s business in 1862 and partnering with James McKenney starting in January 1864. The firm had contracts with the US government and the state of New York.

The box is in untouched condition with surface finish loss to the cover, but is solid and intact. The riveted latch tab is in place, as are all loops and buckles, implement pouch, the side ears on the inner flap, etc. The firm name is clearly stamped on the center of the inner flap, a little light on the top, but with no doubt about the firm. The interior magazine tins are missing, but these show up on the loose and could be replaced. Most interesting is the presence of a complete shoulder sling in solid condition, still buckled in place. This was never fitted with an eagle sling plate and, notably, has been mounted with the rough-side out to imitate buff leather. The box could be dressed up, but we would leave the sling alone.

The real draw of this rig is, of course, the SNY box plate that appears to have been on there forever, and on its own is pretty much worth the price of the whole rig.  [sr]
