1864 PATTERN .58 CALIBER INFANTRY CARTRIDGE BOX BY CROSSMAN

Item Code: 766-947

The regulation issue cartridge box for the infantryman armed with one of the standard Springfield or contract .58 caliber rifle muskets. This pattern with the raised, embossed U.S. in an oval was introduced in the summer of 1864 as a cost cutting measure by eliminating the need for a brass cartridge box plate. The box retains good deep brown/ black color and finish with just some crackling overall and some rubs to the finish along the flex points and edges with just minor finish loss. Two small pinholes on the border of the oval U.S. indicate it might have had an insignia mounted on it at some point. All the belt loops, buckles, latch tabs, side ears, the inner implement pouch and flap are present and secure, as are the original tin magazines inside that were meant to carry two unopened packs of cartridges underneath and twenty loose rounds in the upper trays. The lower right of the outer flap has a crisp U.S. sub-inspector stamp by J.C. Miller. The maker’s name on the lower left suffers a little bit from some slight flaking, but is that of E.A. Crossman & Co. / Newark / N.J.  This is a very good example of the infantry cartridge box by a well known maker and priced right.  [sr]
