The U.S. cartridge box underwent some changes over time and according to its intended ammunition. This is the standard 1861 pattern, determined by its lack of rivets on the fastening tab, intended for use with the .58 caliber rifle musket, the quintessential longarm of the Civil War.

This box and sling have “been together forever,” and have not been coated with oil, polish or preservatives over the years. The rig shows its age but is solid. All buckles, loops, latch tabs and flaps are present and secure. Box plate and sling plate are present and have matching patinas. The sling is black bridle leather, showing some crazing and finish loss from flexing, but with the finish largely intact. The box has some surface abrasion at the lower and upper corners of the flap, which is common from a soldier opening and closing the box. The inner flap, side ears, and implement pouch with flap and tab are present, with some finish loss to the inner flap from flexing. Both tin magazines are there, but lack the dividers in the upper trays.

This is a good untouched example of a Union cartridge box rig as a veteran brought it home that just needs to have some dust wiped off, but you might not even want to do that.  [sr]
