This black leather cartridge box shows signs of heavy use but is in solid condition.

The outer flap is worn along the edges with heavy crazing. The right edge of the flap has a good bit of surface finish loss. Despite the wear the inspectors initials “J.P.C.” are visible in both of the lower corners. At center of the flap is an oval plate bearing the initials of “SNY.” Plate looks to have been there forever and is still anchored by two short leather thongs on the underside. Face has a nice light patina and is free of any major dings, dents and scratches. The latch-tab is split but otherwise complete. It is held to the underside of the box with a rivet and straight line stitching.

The interior flap is in very nice shape with both ears still attached. At center front of the flap is a strong maker’s mark of “BAKER & MCKENNE” in a circle with “N-Y” at center. The inside of the box still retains both of the original tins while the interior body has a complete implement pocket with moderate crazing to the leather.

The bottom edge of the box has both roller buckles and pear shaped brass finial. The box has a half-dollar sized indentation under the finial with a good bit of surface finish loss on the edges. Both roller buckles are firmly in place.

The reverse of the box has both the sling and belt loops. There is light surface crazing and small amounts of surface finish loss along the top and bottom edges.

Still attached to the box is a complete while buff leather sling in good pliable condition but exhibiting heavy surface dirt from use, age and storage. The Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate is present and anchored by a long piece of buff leather. Plate shows great detail and has a very nice patina that matches the SNY plate on the box.

Though this set shows signs of heavy use there are no rips or weak points on the sling and all the sewn seams on the box are tight.

This is a rare set in good displayable condition.
