This leather Confederate percussion cap box is a fine example of a scarce ‘Johnny’ percussion cap box. In remarkable condition, the artifact exhibits only seam stitching which is still strong and tight with no brass or copper rivets in the construction.  Bridle leather is in very strong condition and exhibits light to moderate surface cracking with some crazing and flaking at the top hinge. Piece has a black leather coloring along with a light film of surface dirt. Accoutrement retains both ‘ears’ or side covers on the inner flap.  Inner flap bears no stampings. Box outer flap measures 3 7/8” wide x 3” high x 1” deep and is missing its wool fleece pad inside long gone, as is the nipple pick. Three small (3/8” high) carved letters “L I W” appear on the right side surface of the flap. Sewn to the outer flap with horizontal stitching is a 3” long leather closure tab that is in great condition with no rips or tears.  Has two small openings for the finial. Original pear-shaped lead finial is tight and strong at the bottom of the box. Accoutrement retains its single (1¼” wide) original, black leather vertical belt loop sewn to the backside. Loop exhibits slight curved distortion indicative of belt use. Box appears slightly sunken or misshapen. Never cleaned and slightly dry but supple. A fine Confederate artifact, this scarce unmarked percussion cap box is in remarkable condition.
